Holme Trakehners 2000.

Yet another year has gone by with lots of Trakehner Highlights and as always with horses a few low ones! 2000 brought the highest number of foals born so far in one season with 25 purebred foals born. (this excludes the 7 foals born to visiting mares).

Sire: Chestnut Bay Black Colts Fillies Total
Holme Grove Solomon 5 6 1 5 7 12
Holme Grove Prokofiev 2 1 6 4 5 9
Holme Park Krug 1 2     3 3
Gadsby   1     1 1

100% of the mares were back in foal for 2001 (although Holme Park Kalahari reabsorbed). We have 3 maiden’s expecting their first foals in 2001 and so have a total of 28 foals due. Full details of each new foal born will be published on our website at www.holmetrakehners.com .

We had the exciting arrival of the first crop of Holme Park Krug foals which made their first public appearance at our Open Day on 25th June 2000. Repeating the success that Holme Grove Prokofiev had with his first foal Holme Park Floyd becoming Champion TBF Foal 1999, one of Holme Park Krug’s first foals, Holme Grove Devaux out of Holme Grove Donauwoge by Fabian went on to take the foal Championship 2000 at the TBF Show in a very large class. Reserve Champion foal went to a Holme Grove Boizel by Holme Grove Prokofiev out of Holme Grove Barbarella by Holme Grove Solomon. Our ‘old boy’ Holme Grove Solomon still reigned supreme with two of his progeny, Khloe Klassiche out of PM Holme Park Kristie owned by Vicki Scott and Holme Grove Gineta out of PM Holme Grove Genesis owned by Edward Fewtrell taking Supreme and Reserve.

Following the great success of the annual show we were all brought down to earth with a very big bump the following week, when the wonderful colt foal, Holme Grove Mercier by Holme Grove Solomon out of SPS Holme Grove Marcella jumped out of one of our sand yards, impaling himself on the gate and dying from his injuries.

Disaster struck again in October when Holme Grove Donauwoge had a serious colic and was rushed to Rossdales at Newmarket where she underwent emergency surgery. They say she was the most seriously ill horse that they had operated on and saved, they say it was her outstanding temperament that saved her as she was so cooperative with all the treatment she had to receive. Remarkably through all this surgery and trauma she managed to hold her foal by Holme Park Krug. 7 weeks after the surgery she gave us another scare and started to colic again. Within 3 hours of the first signs of colic she was back at Newmarket ! Thankfully with painkillers the colic subsided without the need for further surgery and after a further 6 days stay under observation she is now home again, and the foal is still alive and kicking.

While Donauwoge was away at Newmarket, SPS Holme Grove Florence decided to add to the trauma by aborting her foal at 4 months of gestation ( filly by Holme Grove Solomon). Unfortunately the umbilical cord had become very twisted and stopped the blood supply to the foal so the foal had died.

On a positive note we know that with the number of horses we have we are going to have some problems. With the law of averages we have very few problems. We were delighted to purchase a new mare Pr St Liaison III by E.H. Hohenstein from Neumünster this year. She is foal to the Trakehner Stallion Cornus for 2001. She was 3rd Highest placed Trakehner in the Mare Performance Test 2000 in Germany. Holme Grove Prokofiev has started his Dressage career under Julia Wetton and the partnership are training with Kyra Kyrkland.
