HOLME PARK HOUDINI

Date of Birth:  26th June 2007

Time: overnight

Sex:   Colt

Colour:  Chestnut

Holy Night was not due to foal until 5th July but wanted to show off her foal at the Open Day on Sunday so thought he should arrive early!  So without warning last night she produced this handsome chap!

This year the chestnut mares are having the black foals and the blacks are having chestnut!  Better for filming as the foals show up against their Dams!!

26.6.07 11pm. Unfortunately we have spent Tuesday evening with Holy Night suffering from a colic and we have had to take her to the veterinary hospital as she was in a lot of distress.  We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious but will update this site tomorrow.
Holy arrived at the hospital just after midnight and was assessed by Peter Green and although on rectal examination he could not diagnose the problem she was in such pain despite pain killers that we agreed to open her up to see what was going on.  He agreed that if the prognosis was not good once he had her on the table he would call me to advise if she should be put to sleep.  If the prognosis was good then he would operate and call me in the morning.  It is now 6am and he did not call overnight so she must have made it through the night and will update the news once we hear from him this morning.
27.6.07 Have just spoken to Peter Green at the hospital and it appears it was not a colic but a torn ligament and ruptered artery that had given her a massive internal haemorrhage!  They were able to operate in time and save her.  It was just lucky we were with Holy at the time this happened and were able to act quickly.  If not we would have found a dead horse this morning!

Didn't sleep very well but very relieved this morning as the vets have said as long as she survives the next 24 hours she should make a full recovery.  The foal is with her and suckling and she is comfortable.  She lost a lot of blood so is weak and being given fluids.  She will be fed on cut grass and can start to go out to graze with her foal for a few hours after 48 hours.

28.6.07 Had call from vets with update on Holy this afternoon.  She is improving in herself and bright and feeding the foal.  Their only concern is that she is still dripping a little blood from her wound and they will feel happier once this has stopped.  So far so good but they did say not out of danger yet.

2.07.07 We spoke to the hospital this morning and good news on Holy as she is bright and comfortable and progressing really well - what a huge relief!

3.07.07 Delighted to say we were able to collect Holy Night this morning and she and Houdini are safely back in their stable.  She has to stay on box rest until after her staples are removed next Monday.

6.07.07 Holy is doing well.  She is grazing in hand and having cut grass in her stable.  Houdini likes to play on the lawn while mum is grazing ! - see photos.

16.07.07 Holy is still progressing well following the removal of her staples on 9th July the vets have still requested we graze her in hand as want to be sure everything has fully healed before we let her loose in the field as do not want to risk her damaging herself after such a serious condition.  Houdini is stunning and so friendly although would love to go and play with the other foals.
