Sadly 10 weeks prematurely Genesis has aborted twins. Unfortunately although scanned several times early in her pregnancy twins were not detected.
We noticed on Friday 27th January that she had suddenly started bagging up and had some milk and her vulva was elongated and relaxed. She seemed settled and well in herself but we put her in a foaling box and had the foaling alarm on her in case she started to foal. At about 11pm on Sunday evening she set the foaling alarm off and was very hot and sweaty and just after midnight she produced a small bay filly complete in its birth sack. Lina broke the sack and managed to revive her. The second foal was a colt which was delivered with the afterbirth a few minutes after the filly. This colt had been dead a few days and was very immature with no hair. Unfortunately the filly although alive was far too immature to have a viable chance, she did not have much hair covering, her eyes were closed and she had no sucking reflex. Her legs were so fine and weak she would not have been able to stand and therefore we let her slip away. We left the filly in the stable with Genesis overnight so that she could accept that she had gone but she seemed quite relaxed and unperturbed by the whole thing and has today gone back with her friends in the barn. At 20 years old this year we will have to see will go back in foal again this season. .
