We have had an eventful foaling season so far, starting with the twins and last night at 10.15pm HP Sundance gave us a stunning bay colt by Holme Grove Prokofiev and then at 01.15am HP Velvet started to foal. However we had a bad presentation with two front legs but no head! We called the vet and she confirmed that we had the same presentation that we had with her 3 years ago when she needed a caesarean to deliver a dead foal. We travelled her 40 minutes in the lorry to the Equine hospital and their specialists confirmed that the foal was already dead (which is probably why it had not presented correctly) and tried in vain to get the foal out. After a little while we had to make the decision as to whether to go for surgery again to save the mare or to put her down. At 13 and a second Caesar we all agreed it would be kinder to put her to sleep. This is one of the worse nightmares of breeding. Velvet has always been one of my favourite mares and it was hard to say goodbye.

We must however still remind ourselves how lucky we have been over the years and that the fun we have from our Trakehners far out-ways these moments of upset.
