Holme Park Saturnes is owned by Leszek Stern.  We had a call from Mr Stern who was worried about Saturnes and foaling as he has not been well and had to go into hospital to have an operation on his eye.  She was in foal  by Mr Stern's beautiful Arab stallion Murabak.  We spoke to him on 4th March and although he didn't think she should be due until end of March she was waxing up.  Paul and I went to pick her up on Saturday 6th March.

Tonight she foaled - but we got more than we bargained on.  She went into labour and delivered a beautiful chestnut filly with no problems.  Although the filly was small we thought she was too big to think that she was a twin.  However a few minutes later Saturnes started straining again - we thought to deliver the afterbirth but out popped another foal complete in the afterbirth.  This one a colt and smaller than his sister.  The first few moments he was very weak and rattly on his chest but with lots of massaging he came to life and is a very pretty little boy.  We milked the mare to make sure both foals got some of the early colostrum.  The little filly was soon on her feet and found her way to the milk bar but the colt is going to need a bit more help.  We will keep you informed of their progress.  Our smallest foal rug fitted the filly but we had to use our boxer dog's coat for the colt !!

The little colt is still unable to stand up unless you hold him but is getting stronger all the time.  I think these first 24 hours will be crucial for him.  We are feeding him every 2 hours at the moment to try and get his strength up
.  We will give him some extra colostrum substitute as well to give him the best chance.  The filly is strong and cantering around the box and we have to keep milking the mare to make sure she does not take it all as her brother needs some but can't get to the milk bar yet.

Both foals progressing well.  The colt is now able to stand unaided although can't get up on his own yet, but definately stronger.  The filly is full of energy and doesn't mind knocking her little brother over.

The colt was quite weak yesterday afternoon and we found he had some impacted muconium (constipation).  Tanja tried to remove it with lots of lubricant and at first did not succeed and thought we would loose him.  However a little while later he managed to pass this and the milk pooh that had backed up behind and he felt much better.  - now he has a chance but is still very weak.  We will do all we can for him.  The little filly is very strong and is running around the stable, but she does not seem to notice her little brother and keeps standing on him!!  Harry and Tanja have been great as they are getting up in the night to feed him until he is strong enough to drink from Saturnes.  -

Unfortunately despite every effort our little colt was not strong enough to make it and he died this afternoon.  He was not well enough developed  but at least we did all we could.  He was very cute. At least Saturnes will not pine for him as she still has her filly and she had in fact lost interested in the colt in the last 24 hours so I think she knew he was not going to make it.

Little Holme Park Surprise was buried today - we had a little funeral to say goodbye.  He was a fighter but just not meant to be.

Holme Park Starlet is totally unaware that she has lost her brother and mother and baby are happy and well.  This just shows how important it is to have your mare scanned to make sure there are not twins as we would never allow them to develop as they can be detected at a very early stage in pregnancy.  It is very unusual for them to go to term and even more unusual to be born alive and heartbreaking to loose them once they are there.

Little HP Starlet is progressing well she is full of energy and very friendly.  When out in the field she is giving her Mum the real run around.  She is definitely going to be grey like her father as already has a lot of grey hairs.
